    1ST GRADE WEATHER LAB
    Students will learn to identify the ecosystems of Los Angeles. They will learn that we have two planting seasons: a warm and a cool season and how weather affects what grows and thrives in certain areas. Students will also record and compare soil temperatures throughout the garden.

    2nd grade foraging lab
    Students will learn how the first settlers used to gather food in the wild. Foraging was a way to survive before grocery stores and farming. Students will learn how to be safe when harvesting and gathering food from the garden and how to make a healthy snack with the foraged items.

    3rd grade native garden lab
    Students will learn about plants native to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and about the different environmental needs of the various plants. They will participate in a seed bomb making activity using clay, compost, edible flowers and native seeds.

    Students will learn about the beneficial role that worms play in maintaining a healthy garden and in reducing the amount of garbage we put into our landfills. The students will collaborate on building a worm farm and making compost tea for the garden.

    5th grade tea and medicinal garden lab
    Students will learn that early settlers as well as the native Tongva people of Palos Verdes utilized the medicinal properties of herbs to create teas and medicines that promoted anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. They will taste a herbal infusion of various items from the garden and construct their own herbal tea bags.
